Also known as pothos or golden pothos, devil’s ivy grows fast but requires very little attention. It’s happy to be placed in any area in the house but particularly suits hanging planters. Their waxy, heart-shaped leaves come in a variety of colours ranging from bright light greenish yellow through to a mottled white and green depending on the cultivar. Devil’s ivy won’t complain too much if you forget to water it but it’s best to water once a week during the warmer months and once every other week when the temperatures drop.
This instantly recognisable plant with its lush green leaves punctuated with distinctive holes is extremely popular, especially as it’s so easy to care for. Not only will it make a stunning statement in your home, but it needs minimal care except for regular cleaning with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust. Simply water it when the soil is dry and feed monthly in spring and summer.
A popular plant in offices due to its hardy nature, the Mass Cane is ideal for beginners. Its tall stems and long green leaves can reach up to 1.8 metres tall and make it ideal as a floor standing plant and it only needs to be watered once a week. However, it’s toxic to dogs and cats, so give it a wide berth if you have pets.
Although it looks extremely exotic, the Bromeliad is actually very easy to care for. It gets its striking good looks from its coloured rosettes and does best in medium to bright light conditions. Simply water by filling the central ‘cup’ of the plant once a week during warm weather and less often as the temperatures drop and be sure to flush it regularly to ensure that water is not stagnating in the cup.
Also known as the Snake Plant, the Mother-in-Law’s Tongue has sharply pointed leaves and originates from Southern Africa and Asia. An extremely hardy plant, it can grow up to two metres tall and likes to be placed in bright light, preferably in a spot that receives direct sun for a few hours each day. Keep the soil slightly damp during the summer months and allow it to dry out during the winter months to avoid rot. Although it’s extremely hard to kill, it does prefer to be too dry than too damp so don’t be tempted to give it too much water.
An extremely popular plant right now, the Rubber Plant has large shiny foliage in various shades of dark green and burgundy. The beauty of this plant, apart from being easy to care for, is that you can keep it as a small specimen or let it spread its leaves and grow into a tree. It all depends on the size of pot you keep it in. Whether it’s big or small it prefers bright light and will be happy to be watered once a week in warmer seasons and just once every 2-4 weeks in the colder months.
A beautiful, elegant houseplant with glossy, dark green foliage and stunning white flowers, the Peace Lily is a popular addition to many homes. It’s best placed in bright, indirect light and may not bloom in low light areas. They hate wet soil so only water when the soil dries out and keep the foliage bright and glossy by wiping it with a soft cloth. One proviso – it’s toxic so it must be kept away from children and pets.
At Jacob & Roy, we have a wide selection of beautiful plants that require little maintenance, combining a minimum need for care with maximum impact. Plus, all our plants come with comprehensive care instructions too.
]]>When shopping for a house plant, it is common for us to fall in love with one and make a purchase without really understand what it needs to thrive. It is often only a short while later that we come to realise that the plant does not like where it has been placed. Understanding a plant's preferences before making that purchase is therefore essential.
Just like people, house plants have their own preferences and thrive in different environments. Some excel in hotter areas, near fireplaces and radiators; others prefer cooler spaces near open windows. Having an idea of where you would like to put your house plant is a great place to start when looking for that perfect plant.
Another factor to consider is how much maintenance your house plant requires. Given the right care, every plant has the opportunity to grow, bloom and add life to any environment but it is important to consider how much time and dedication that you are able to commit. At Jacob & Roy, we have a wide selection of plants that require little maintenance, combining a minimum need for care with maximum benefits.
Life can be unpredictable. We all have days and weeks when we feel like we do not stop so having a low maintenance plant can be the perfect addition to your home. Needing little sunlight and water, these plants are a great constant in your property, providing joy when you need it most.
Spruce up your home with some greenery that is easy to care for and reap the benefits that a house plant can provide without the stress of a regimented care routine. Here at Jacob & Roy, we have a plentiful selection of beautiful plants including:
… and more. Whether you are purchasing for yourself or a loved one, you are sure to find the perfect house plant to suit your lifestyle in our collections.

]]>Fear not, here we will discuss how you can maximise your plant's lifespan with the correct care and how to avoid yellowing or drooping going forwards.
Diagnosing Your Plant’s Distress
Whilst there could be a number of reasons as to why your plant is sick, usually, it is because of either under-watering or over-watering. An easy way to diagnose is to press a finger to the soil. If it feels parched, it is likely that you are not watering your plant enough; if it feels too moist, perhaps you are over-watering. Try changing your watering habits accordingly and see whether the condition of your plant improves.
The second cause of your plant's distress is a lack of oxygen. Their leaves could be turning yellow because they are starved for sunshine. If you have placed the plant in an area of the home that does not get much natural sunlight, consider moving it to an area that does for a period of time. A simple adjustment can make all the difference.
More often than not, home owners will purchase a plant because it looks attractive without considering what care the plant needs to flourish. Some plants need warm temperatures and sunlight. Others prefer colder temperatures and fresh air. Understanding the environment in which your plant thrives is key for a long, nourished life.
Here at Jacob & Roy, we believe in teaching you the fundamentals about caring for your plant before you have even purchased it. All of our plants have care instructions online and these are sent alongside your plant at delivery, so you are always in the know about your plant’s preferences. ]]>If you are struggling with these and wondering ‘how can I get rid of plant flies and fungus gnats’ then you are not alone. Continue reading to learn more.
Let’s start with the good news. The life cycle of these pests is short; just a few days in fact, so all you have to do is interrupt their cycle and time will take care of the rest. But how do you interrupt the cycle?
One of the most common treatments is to smother the top of the soil with a layer that is harder to penetrate. Plant flies and fungus gnats lay their eggs in the top layer of soil; if these are unable to climb out from the soil, they will die underneath, and your problem will be solved.
Another easy method is to lure the flies away from the plant by enticing them with something more appealing. This could be in the form of a sticky trap such as a brightly coloured card that is covered in petroleum jelly or a drowning trap such as a fruity solution covered in cling wrap with mini holes poked in the top.
If the infestation appears to be too bad to manage, re-potting and sanitizing can be the best treatment. Simply remove your plant from its pot, getting rid of as much of the soil as possible and then spend some time cleaning and sanitizing the pot before replanting. Combining this with another treatment method is a very effective way to get rid of those flies.

Once you have eradicated your plant from flies and fungus gnats it is important to ensure that they don’t return. To help your plant thrive, follow our care tips here at Jacob & Roy. With detailed instructions on how to care for your plant accessible both online and with your delivery, you are always in the know.
Plant flies and fungus gnats thrive in moist conditions, so it is important to only give your plant the amount of water that it needs to survive. Using a filtration system can help because it prevents water from accumulating in the soil. Make sure that you are aware of the needs of your plant to prevent over-watering.
At Jacob & Roy, we provide much more than a house plant. We provide quality plants, chic pots, and beautiful accessories alongside in-depth advice about how to allow them to thrive. Plant flies and fungus gnats are a thing of the past with us by your side.

How often you need to water your plants is dependent on the type and size of plant, type and size of pot, the temperature, the humidity levels, and the plant’s rate of growth.
That said, most plants need to be watered every 7-21 days. However, rather than set up a watering schedule, you should monitor your plants to see whether they need watering. Before you assess whether your plant is thirsty, you’ll need to know a little about the plant itself. Some plants love dry conditions, others thrive in wet conditions. Some plants like to dry out completely followed by a thorough soaking. Others need the environment to be consistently moist. Therefore, knowing your plant’s water requirements will help you to assess whether to water it or not.
Once you know what your plant needs, it’s easy to see whether a plant requires water is by using one or more of the following methods:
Test Soil Dryness – to test the soil, simply stick your index finger into the soil or potting medium around your plant to feel whether the top few inches are damp. The depth of the dry soil is a good indicator of whether the plant needs water.
Monitor the Weight of the Pot – another simple way to check whether a plant needs water is to pick up the pot. Dry soil is lighter than wet soil so, if you use this method regularly, you’ll easily be able to tell whether there is plenty of water still in the pot.
Check the Drainage Holes – you can also assess soil dryness by feeling the bottom of the potting medium through the drainage holes in the pot. If it feels very dry, your plant will need some water.
Watch for Signs of Wilting – some plants will let you know that they need water by wilting. However, if you do see signs of wilting or drooping leaves you should still check the soil. Sometimes plants wilt due to overwatering or disease.
Use a Moisture Meter – moisture meters are an inexpensive but reliable way to keep track of how much water has been used. These are especially useful for plants that are a bit more difficult to look after or as a visual reminder if you often forget to water your plants.
Your plant’s need for water will change throughout the year depending on the season. During the winter months, many plants grow more slowly or may even be dormant which will mean that they require less water. As temperatures warm up and the plant moves into a growing phase, they’ll require more.
Fortunately, the more you become familiar with your plant, the easier it will be to decide when and how much water to give it. Plus, when you buy your plants from Jacob & Roy, they come complete with comprehensive care instructions to ensure that you know exactly what they need.
]]>Many of us already have spider plants in our homes as they not only look great and produce lots of babies but they’re easy to care for too. Luckily, they’re pet-friendly, so even if your kitten decides to play pat-a-cake with a spider plant baby they’ll be fine. However, we suggest that you keep it out of the way on a high shelf to keep it and your kitten safe. Spider plants also have lots of air-purifying chlorophytum to help rid your home of nasty toxins.
Known for its masses of soft spears, the Boston fern not only purifies the air but adds fun and drama to any room. They do best in a humid area such as the bathroom or kitchen and don’t like too much handling. While they won’t cause any harm to pets, just like other plants, it’s best to keep them out of the way of prying paws and mischievous mouths.
Perfect for the shadier areas of your home, the leafy Calathea is pet-friendly and loves to be positioned with other plant friends. However, do check because some varieties of Calathea are not so pet-friendly. If in doubt, get in touch with us for advice but we can recommend Calathea Stromanthe Triostar with its striking, coloured foliage and Pinstripe Calathea that looks so perfect you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a fake. If you want a large plant to stand on the floor, you can’t go far wrong with a Calathea Rufibarba with its soft, velvety leaves.
Money may not grow on trees, but the money tree is right on the money when it comes to pet-friendly plants. With its crazy twisted trunk and shiny, green leaves, it’s hardy, it’s attractive and it’s perfect for anyone who often forgets to water their plants as it needs very little H2O. It’s also said to bring good fortune to your home!
Exotic and dramatic, palms are a wonderful feature for any home. However, you must make sure that the species you choose is pet friendly. Keep well away from Sago palms and opt for Parlour, Areca or Kentia palms instead. You may find that your kitty loves to chew on the large grass-like leaves of the Kentia palm, but don’t worry, it can’t harm them. Parlour palms are particularly hardy and won’t be phased if they’re knocked over by an over-enthusiastic puppy.
We couldn’t finish our list without including the beautiful blue star fern. Its curly green and blue-tinged spear-like fronds have made it a firm favourite in recent years. It’s easy to look after although it will do best if you keep it in the steamy and humid atmosphere of the bathroom or kitchen where they’ll add texture and interest.
Plants come in all shapes and sizes and all colours too, not just green. You can choose plants with coloured leaves, stems or flowers to match or complement your colour scheme. For example, brightly coloured species such as the Pink Polka Dot plants work beautifully. Or simply go for a lush, green look with large leaved varieties. Your choice of containers and pots can also reflect your chosen colour scheme.
For a minimalist look, a single plant or single variety of plant will allow the greenery to stand out from the neutral background, and something striking, such as Monstera, will work well in a minimalist space. If you want the plants to take centre stage, create an urban jungle with a variety of plants. Mix trailing plants with varieties with interesting leaf shapes. However, if you do use a lot of plants, you must make sure that you have enough time to care for them – unhealthy and neglected plants never look good.
If you don’t have a lot of counter or floor space, you can still incorporate plants by displaying them in hanging containers or baskets. There are so many different types to choose from, including plants that love to trail downwards such as ivy.
Do you prefer to display your plants in an eclectic mix of containers or use pots of the same colour? If you want to use all white pots, for example, you can add interest by mixing textures and patterns. Plant stands are a popular trend and will enable you to adjust the height of your plant display.
If you only have room or time to care for one plant, why not go large? Get a large, feature plant that stands on the floor. Rubber figs, Monstera deliciosa and the Fiddle Leaf Ficus all make fantastic feature plants for both homes and offices.
If you don’t have a lot of surfaces or floor space, why not create a plant ‘shelfie’ using a shelf, mantle, bookshelf, window ledge? Simply use a variety of plants in interesting pots and containers and move them around as the mood takes you.
Create a stylish and eye-catching display combining plants and art together. Placing paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and keepsakes amongst your plant display will show your personality and tastes.

]]>Firstly, repotting a plant doesn’t necessarily mean changing its pot, it can also be a simple case of changing the potting medium or soil. Adding new soil means adding new nutrients – all good news for your plant.
When Does a Plant Need Repotting?
Most plants will need repotting every 12-18 months, although some slow-growing plants may remain happy in the same pot for several years. In this instance, it will just need the soil refreshing as mentioned above. The best time of year to repot your plants is in the spring before the plants start their growing season.
What Size of Pot Should You Choose?
If you do have to change the plant pot, you should choose a new pot that’s no larger than an extra 2-5cm (1-2”) in diameter if it’s a smaller plant. For large plants in floor planters, do not exceed an extra 10 cm (4”) in diameter.
Why is size important? Because if you repot in too large a pot, the plant and its roots will have too much room. More soil means more water and the roots are in more danger of rotting through overwatering.
How to Repot Your Plant
Make sure that you have everything to hand to repot your plant including the new pot (if you’re using one), the planting mixture, and gravel for drainage (if your pot doesn’t have a drainage hole.
Now that your plant is in its new home it will welcome some water. Then place it back in its location and enjoy!
Treat Your Plant to a New Planter
At Jacob & Roy we stock a wide range of beautiful, chic planters to suit every plant and every location. So, when you’ve re-potted your plant, why not treat it to a new planter too?
]]>When it comes to plants, as long as they have sufficient light, water and drainage; they will live a long and nourished life. Follow expert advice to help your plant live to its fullest potential. Continue reading to learn about what to do when your decorative planter doesn’t have a drainage hole.
Much like people, plants have preferences and thrive in different conditions. Some prefer direct sunlight; others flourish in indirect sunlight. Some thrive in humid, moist conditions and others need watering only sparsely. The same applies to drainage; certain plants will need drier soil in order to excel and others will need wetter soil.
Create a filtration layer
A simple workaround for when your planter doesn’t have a drainage hole is to create a filtration layer underneath the plant. There are many ways in which this can be created but a common technique is to add pebbles to the bottom of the planter. As your plant will be sitting above the base, excess moisture is able to gather underneath the soil and roots, allowing it to breathe.
Use the ‘staging’ technique
Arguably one of the easiest solutions is to simply place a pot with drainage holes inside your new decorative planter. This means that your plant does not live in your planter, it lives in a nursery pot (that it likely came in) instead. Most homeowners adopt this as a short-term solution, and it is important to remember that this is a harder technique if you have bought a plant and pot as one.
When shopping for decorative planters, why not choose Jacob & Roy? We offer luxury packages comprising beautiful plants, chic pots and great accessories. This simply means to cut a part of the plant such as the root, stem or leaf and replant it to regenerate the entire plant. Make sure you cut on an angle to maximise the root area and plant in a small pot. Covering with a plastic bag is advantageous as this creates a greenhouse effect, keeping in moisture. Once roots have started to grow, simply replant and continue your care.
Layering is a propagating technique that does not involve cutting the existing plant. Simply bury part of the stem into the soil and new roots will start to form. The new plant sources food and water from the existing plant as it is still attached. Once the new plant has formed you can cut the connecting stem and replant as you like.
When propagating a plant, you want to ensure that you are able to maintain the second plant also. Only too often we fall in love with a plant then find out we do not have the knowledge, time or skills to adequately care for it. ]]>But don’t worry, it’s possible to develop ‘green fingers’ – you just need to understand what your plants need. So read on to find out more.
Where and How to Buy Plants
Many of us pick up plants while we’re doing our food shop. They look so appealing on the supermarket shelves that we can’t resist. But generally, this isn’t the best place to buy plants. If you’re an inexperienced plant owner, it’s best to buy your plant from a supplier that can give you advice on how to look after it. If you choose to buy from an online plant company, make sure that they’re well established, have good reviews and takes care to make sure they arrive as healthy as they were when they left their premises.
Consider Space and Time
You may love the idea of a large plant, but do you have a space where it will thrive, or will it be relegated to a dark corner? Equally, if you don’t have a lot of time to spare, choosing plants that need a lot of attention is doomed for disaster. You’ll need to assess access to light, the temperature and humidity in your property and how much time you can dedicate to caring for your plants.
Choose a Healthy Plant
As a beginner, you should only ever buy plants that look vibrant and healthy with new growth. If a leaf is simply damaged due to humidity or because it’s been knocked or bent, that’s fine but if there are any signs of infestations or fungus, leave it on the shelf.
Caring for Your Plant Home
So, you’ve chosen your plant, picked up some plant food and of course, you couldn’t resist that pretty planter, so what next? We look at the most important things to consider.
Light
Plants need light so if you’re not sure where to put it, put it in the window. Light is a plant’s food, so they need as much as possible. Not giving them light, is like putting them on a diet! However, plants do have different light requirements. For example, begonias, succulents, and cacti like lots of direct sun so they will do well in the sunniest window while plants from more shaded regions, such as Boston ferns or Bird’s Nest ferns will prefer a shadier spot. Plus, remember that the bigger the plant is, the more light it will need.
Water
The simple rule is water when the soil is dry. However, it’s important to not over or under-water your plant. Rather than counting days to establish a watering schedule, feel the soil every couple of days. If it’s dry, give it some water. You’ll need to check to a depth of one or two inches rather than just the surface. If the soil is moist and smells, your plant will rot.
Always use warm water for your plant as it absorbs faster and aim the stream of water towards the base of the plant rather than the leaves. Water gradually, waiting for the water to be absorbed before you add more. When water starts to run through to the saucer - stop.
We Help You to Take Care of Your Plants
At Jacob & Roy, we not only provide you with beautiful and healthy plants, but each plant comes with a comprehensive set of care instructions too. We also offer a wide range of chic planters and accessories to display your chosen plants to their best advantage.
